Men's Epée
"Given the early start required to
make the ferry I was expecting to be a bit sluggish and on poor form.
And I was right... at first. I squeaked through my first few pool
matches without really fencing very well - got narrow victories where
I should have had wide victories, that sort of thing; but I was
getting the victories and ultimately only dropped one of the 6 bouts.
I seeded 13th out of 81. That gave me a bye so there was a bit of a
wait before my first DE. It was against a guy from the Isle who I'd
fenced before, Tim Keyte. We traded points for a while, until the
start of the second period. He pulled away to lead 10-8, but I dug
deep and scored the next 7 points for the win.
The next match was Gerry Simpson.
I was expecting a tough one and I wasn't disappointed. He got off to
an early lead and for a while it was all I could do to prevent him
extending his lead further. Eventually I started to find my rhythm and
managed to catch him up. Finally with the scores levelled at 13-all, I
scored once... then again, to take the bout. Another very tough
match.
Next up, in the last 16 now, was Darryl
Hazelwood, a friend from many previous competitions. The match started
poorly for me: he was just keeping his point in line with my hand and
I was obligingly thrusting my hand onto it. He opened up quite a lead
before I started to close off those openings and pull back some
points. I started to put the pressure on and take the fight to him and
clawed my way back into the match. Eventually we reached 14-13, with
me in front. There were a few tense exchanges, then he scored the next
hit for 14-all. A few more exchanges and the light came up... for him.
:-( It was a match I lost due to unforced errors at the start. Very
frustrating. I've resolved not to let that happen again."
